Urban Joy

I think it’s pretty clear from the volume of posts on the blog lately that Joy is one of my favourite ever places to shop. Every item I’ve owned from them just fits perfectly and I’m pretty certain there are soon to be some new additions to my collection (yellow dress, I’m after you!). The jumper in this post was free as I spent over £75 when I was last in store…Joy are brilliant like that, right now they are offering a free dress worth £35 when you spend £75 which is a pretty sweet deal!

Sweat: Joy (here) | Skirt c/o Ax Paris last year | Boots: Jonak at Sarenza | Necklace c/o Jon Richard

These photos were taken outside the building where Ben and his friend rent a studio for their music work. We still haven’t worked out why there was a sofa and TV outside but couldn’t resist playing around! We make the studio our base when we’re spending a day in Bristol, perfect for dumping heavy bags and a great location for exploring the city by foot. It’s right near Gloucester Road & Stokes Croft, both great for atmosphere and vibe with some amazing independent shops and local talents, but also only a short was to Cabot Circus.

I’d really like to expand the areas in Bristol that I take outfit photos in as there are some awesome locations and loads of amazing graffiti backdrops. I’m still working up the courage to just stop where there are plenty of people milling around…how do fellow bloggers do it?

This is probably one of my current favourite weekend outfits, it is so comfortable and perfect for whatever we decide to do. I’m going to be living in this sweat all winter, as much as I love all the colour around this season it’ll take a heck of a lot to shift me away from monochrome.

  1. Had never heard of Joy but love that sweatshirt! Great to have a shopping base in Bristol. The photos look great with the furniture etc, infact I htink that sofa would look fab in my lounge.

  2. I have to admit, Joy are somewhere I’m not going to be shopping anymore after their recent PR fail, which is a shame because I did used to like their clothes.
It’s nice to have a change of location for photos, but tricky with an unwilling OH who hates the whole blogging thing so refuses to take photos!

  3. I was trolled on Twitter yesterday for buying a dress from Joy, eventhough it was before their PR fail (said some ignorant things about mental illness). I feel like this person (doing the trolling) singled me out because I said as someone with mental illness, what they said was wrong, but I didn’t personally feel offended or discriminated against due to one person’s remarks.
I would feel uncomfortable condemming a whole company because of something one person said in that one rash moment. It wont stop me wearing the dress and loving it, and since Joy took responsibility and vowed to make sure nothing like it happens again, I think it is fair to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Love the jumper and love the pictures, you look great Laura.

  4. Laura, who’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, wrote this this thoughtful letter to Joy to try to explain the harm that trivialising psychiatric medication and serious mental health problems can cause:

I’d really recommend reading it, now that Joy has brought the issue of serious mental illness to the forefront.

We all make mistakes and, sometimes, they can prove to be an opportunity to learn about something outside our usual sphere. I hope that’s the case here. Thank you.
